Richard Harrison

Richard Harrison is the author of 6 books of poetry, among them Big Breath of a Wish, which won the City of Calgary Book Prize and was nominated for the Governor-General's Award. Hero of the Play, his internationally acclaimed book of poems on hockey was the first book of poetry launched at the Hockey Hall of Fame; Richard also introduced himself as the Markin-Flanagan Writer-in-Residence by reading from Hero at the Saddledome. Richard's poetry has been read on CBC, and in universities and colleges across the continent; it has been included on several literature courses.

Richard's research interests have led him to publish numerous essays in several fields - literary studies, sports, and comics and the graphic novel. With the University of Victoria's Jamie Dopp, Richard will launch Now is the Winter, a book of essays from writers around the world on the social significance of hockey. In the fall of 2010, along with Mount Royal colleague Lee Easton, Richard will be launching Secret Identity Reader - a book of essays written by Richard and Lee about the iconic superhero. This summer's Comic-Con in San Diego saw Richard present his very well-received paper "The Dark Knight Origin of the Man of Steel" on the literary, commercial and folkloric connections between the origin stories of Superman and Batman.

Richard continues to write and publish poetry - the fall, 2009 issue of Canadian Literature has two of his poems in it - and he has just been named Guest Editor at Calgary's own Frontenac House Press for the 2011 Quartet release of poetry. Richard has edited for over 20 years, helping over 30 poets, novelists and essayists bring their work to print. Richard teaches Introductory and Intermediate Creative Writing, Composition, and the Graphic Novel in the Department of English.
