Duane Bratt

Building off work begun in an undergraduate term paper, and inspired by a Toronto Star article, Dr. Duane Bratt is currently revisiting the Canadian nuclear industry. He last dealt with Canada's nuclear policy in 2006's The Politics of CANDU Exports, which examined the foreign policy dimension of the nuclear industry. The new book is focused on the recent changes in the domestic sphere; soaring uranium prices, concerns based on climate change, nuclear refurbishment, rampant energy demand and a decision on whether to stay with the CANDU reactor, or go with a foreign competitor.

In 2004, Dr. Bratt spent three weeks in Afghanistan as part of a tour arranged by the Department of National Defence. "We met with UN people, we did tours of villages, we met with CIDA, so…we got to see a lot more than what many of the troops who stayed behind the wire would see." Research done during the tour will form part of the basis of a new chapter for the second edition of his foreign policy reader: Readings in Canadian Foreign Policy: Classic Debates and New Ideas --co-edited with Christopher Kukucha of the University of Lethbridge.
