Meagan Bowler

, Meagan Bowler's current research focus is on various pedagogical approaches to teaching information literacy. Meagan has been working at the Mount Royal library since 2002.

Keith Brownsey

, After attaining his PhD in political Studies from Queen's University, Dr.Keith Brownsey expanded his expertise in Canadian political science through numerous research projects. Some of his research interests include politics of oil and gas, Canadian federalism and intergovernmental relations and Canadian provincial politics. His most recent work revolves around public administration in Alberta and energy policies at the provincial and federal levels.

Tony Chaston

, Dr. Anthony Chaston has been an instructor in Mount Royal's Psychology Department since 2007. His area of expertise is cognitive neuroscience, specifically having to do with sensation and perception. Dr. Chaston plans to begin research this year on a project delving into time perception, specifically investigation which hemisphere of the brain perceives time. One of the interesting characteristics of the project is the study subjects-they have split brains, meaning the corpus callosum in their brain has been surgically severed, in most cases to control severe seizures.

Dawne Clark

, Originally a teacher and then vice-principal, Dr. Dawne Clark currently pursues a slightly younger area of research: early child development (from conception to age 5). With a Masters and a PhD, along with her BEd, from the University of Calgary, Dr. Clark has taught in Child and Youth Studies since 1996 and is pursuing research on early child well-being and development.

, From research in Gaza Strip refugee camps for his PhD, 20 years ago, to this year's investigations in Malaysia, Dr. Mitchell Clark's research and expertise are cross-cultural and international in nature with a focus on child development and disability. Dr. Clark has been working with MRU at home and abroad since 1981.

Julie Cormack

, Inspired by a childhood brush with archaeology, Dr. Julie Cormack literally dug in and has become an expert on lithics (stone tools) and the history of the anthropology science. She earned her initial degrees from Trent University and then the University of Alberta, before completing her PhD at the University of Liverpool. She has taught in the department of Sociology and Anthropology at MRU since 2001.

, Elaine Danelesko is the Director of the Integrative Health Institute at MRU and a key facilitator of interdisciplinary research; including projects on student stress and employee wellness. Danelesko has background in adult education, and is dedicated to promoting research that includes faculty and students working together to inform a wider audience.

Yasmin Dean

, Building on an interest in international, cross-cultural social work in her undergraduate/graduate degree, Yasmin Dean taught internationally in South Korea and Abu Dhabi before returning to Calgary for her doctoral degree. A full-time Instructor at MRU since 2005, her research focus is now on teaching social work in the global south.

, Falling in love with research will working for the CBC led Patti Derbyshire to transition her broadcasting background and expertise to academia. Earning a Masters in Conflict Management Analysis Organizational Behaviour, she has been teaching at MRU since 1997 and part of the Bissett School of Business faculty since 2002.

Peter Elson

, Peter Elson's research interest in voluntary sector research stems from his experience as a nonprofit executive director and active volunteer. After earning his MSc in Voluntary Sector Organization from the London School of Economics and recently completed his PhD at the University of Toronto, he is now Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Nonprofit Studies.

Nikki Filipuzzi

, Nikki Filipuzzi is a full time instructor in the Department of Justice Studies at Mount Royal. Her primary focus is on completing her PhD dissertation titled "Crime Location Forecasting for Static and Mobile Crime." Her research is aimed towards developing an accurate way to predict high crime locations for offence types involving static targets and mobile targets. Following the completing of her PhD dissertation, Nikki will continue working on the crime mapping software being developed at Mount Royal.

Brian Guthrie

, Dr. Brian Guthrie is investigating the preparation for and responses to large scale traumatic incidents (terrorist attacks, major disasters impacting communities and Institutional school shootings). His investigation will be evaluating or comparing the Critical Incident Stress Management Model and the Psychological First Aide Model's effectiveness in relation to the psychological needs of an individual involved in traumatic events.

Tim Haney

, Dr. Timothy Haney's areas of research interest include inequality (class, race, & gender), urban sociology, poverty, work and labor markets, and the sociology of disaster. He resided in New Orleans before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina.

Janne Holmgren

, Dr.Janne A. Holmgren is tenured faculty in the Department of Criminal Justice Studies. Originally studying molecular biology, Dr. Holmgren decided to combine criminology and science which led to her interest in forensic science and the use of forensic technology in the courts. Dr. Holmgren's reseach focus is on DNA evidence and the evolution of this technology in the criminal justice system. In addition, Dr. Holmgren is a consultant to defence lawyers on issues related to DNA evidence. Dr. Holmgren prefers a multi-method research approach, using both statistical analysis and qualitative interviews.

Peter Howie

, After beginning his career as a geologist, Dr. Peter Howie is now an empirical researcher with international expertise in energy and non-energy minerals and their development. An Instructor at MR since 2004, Dr. Howie's return to academia began with an MBA at McGill University, but went on to include working abroad both in South America before earning his PhD in mineral economics, and in Central Asia afterward.

Derya Kahraman

, Derya Kahraman has taught Finance as a full-time faculty member at a public university in Turkey from 1999 to 2009. In 2009, she moved to Mount Royal University to teach Finance. She holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree in Finance and her current research interests are the financial vulnerability of Canadian Charities and the financial analysis of the US firearms industry.

Patricia Kostouros

, Patricia holds a BA in Human and Social Development with an emphasis in Child and Youth Studies, and a MA in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria B.C. Canada. She has a special interest in practitioner self-care and wrote her thesis on Vicarious Traumatization. Her other interests are in the area of Family Violence and the effect of trauma on child development. Pat is embarking on her Ph.D in Educational Research in the area of trauma and the post secondary student. Ms. Kostouros has managed a Youth Shelter, a Women's Shelter and was the Executive Director of a Women's residence dealing with mental health distress and addictions. She has experience with street inclined and entrenched youth and has worked in the Mental Health field with both youth and adults. Pat is a registered psychologist and has a private practice, Beyond Words Counselling and Consulting Inc. and is a board member with the Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta.

Lynne Lafave

, Dr. Lynne Lafave, BH.Ecol, PhD, (University of Manitoba) uses her knowledge of nutritional oncology to tackle everything from cancer to stress, and she is now taking nutrition online. Teaching in the Physical Education and Recreation Studies department at MRU since 2004, full time as of 2007, Dr. Lafave has developed a technologically-driven blended delivery, as well as fully online nutrition courses.

Mark Lafave

, Dr. Mark Lafave, BPE, MSc, PhD, has been chair of the MRU Athletic Department since 2003. Before which he held several positions at the college, dating back to Dr. Lafave's arrival at MRU in 1994 as an Instructor in the Physical Education department and head Athletic Therapist for Cougar Athletics. After completing his first two degrees at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Lafave came to Calgary and earned his PhD from the University of Calgary with an emphasis on performance-based examinations in athletic therapy.

Barbara McNicol

, After an undergraduate education at Simon Fraser--a degree in Geography and Biology--Dr. Barb McNicol spent nine years working for B.C. Parks and Environment Canada in National Parks. Returning to academia to earn her Masters in Geography from the University of Victoria, and her PhD from the University of Calgary, Dr. McNicol has been teaching at MRU since 2000 and became Chair of the Earth Sciences Department in 2006.

Nancy Ogden

, Dr. Nancy Ogden's research focuses on the central aspects of development as they are observed, studied, and enhanced in real world contexts. Specifically, she is investigating the processes of learning and developments which are involved in children and adolescent growth and maturation. She has been a tenured instructor in the Psychology department at Mount Royal since 1997.

Carolyn Pada

, Drawn to nursing from an early age, Carolyn Pada gained direct acceptance into the University of Alberta's nursing program following high school. After working for almost two decades in mental health--specializing in adolescents and families, and earning her master's degree--she became and Instructor in MRU's School of Nursing in 2007.

Tracy L. Powell

, Tracy Powell earned her Master's from the University of Calgary and is currently an Assistant Professor for the School of Nursing at Mount Royal. Over the next couple years, Tracy will perform a literature review of oncology courses as well as the current state of patient safety issues in acute care and community settings.

, Nonprofit governance, and policy as people-centric or institution-centric, are only a few of Dr. Keith Seel's areas of expertise. After initially working as a teacher with high-needs children, the director of the Institute for Nonprofit Studies at MRU earned a master's and PhD from the University of Calgary by critically examining the power structures in large organizations and the sustainability of nonprofits in Canada.

Scharie Tavcer

, Dr. D. Scharie Tavcer is tenured faculty in the Department of Justice Studies. Prior to a career in academia, Dr. Tavcer worked for the Correctional Services of Canada in various capacities with violent offenders. Her publications & research endeavours revolve around social justice issues particular to violence against women. From a community-based perspective and feminist criminological theory, Dr. Tavcer applies qualitative methods to her research endeavours. Specific research projects have been concerning crimes of desperation & other poverty-related offending, prostitution & sex trafficking, and sexual victimisation & sexual offending.

, An Instructor in MRU's Justice Studies since 2008, Dr. Andreas Tomaszewski examines social justice issues, particularly in relation to inequality. Originally from Germany, Dr. Tomaszewski came to Canada after his undergraduate; earning an MA in Canadian Studies and PhD in sociology.

, Gregg Trueman's future research plans in tend on examining the relationship between multiple levels of simulation learning and interprofessional collaboration. He has been an instructor for the Nursing department at Mount Royal since 2005.

, Dr. Gaye Warthe is currently working towards receiving her PhD in Social Work from the University of Calgary. She is anticipated to complete her dissertation titled "The Development of a Dating Violence Scale for Post Secondary Students" in 2010. Kimberly Williams

, Having earned her Ph.D. in Women's Studies from the University of Maryland in 2008, Kimberly A. Williams is currently an Assistant Professor of Women Studies in the Department of Humanities. Her teaching and research interests include; transnational feminist and queer theories and movements, feminist theories of nationalism, militarization, and international relations, men and masculinities in U.S. foreign policy and American nationalism, gender and global restructuring, visual performance and media culture, feminist and critical pedagogies.

John Winterdyk

, Associate Professor at Mount Royal University since 1988, Dr. John Winterdyk's research focus has--over the past 20 years--shifted to encompass areas from youth justice to a host of criminal justice and criminological issues within international comparative contexts. As past Chair of the Department of Justice Studies initially began his academic career in Psychology, before going on to earn a Masters and PhD in Criminology from Simon Fraser University. In in January 2010, Dr. Winterdyk became the Director of the Centre for Criminology and Justice Research.
