Tracking Crime:
Peter Zizler, a mathematician at Mount Royal College is working to bring policing one step closer to what viewers see on CSI. Armed with statistics and applied mathematics, he is currently collaborating with the Regina RCMP and the Justice Studies Department at the college to develop a program to assess the likelihood of crime taking place in a given location. Once completed, the software will be less expensive than other alternatives, allowing police forces to track data about crime rates in their areas.
Vancouver 2010 Crash Pads
The design and installation of speed skating crash pads for the 2010 olympics was a year long undertaking for Dr. Sean Maw of MRC and Dr. Clifton Johnston of the University of Calgary. The co-researchers had previously worked on the Torino Games and had been conducting research at the Calgary Olympic Oval for the previous five years. Using their backgrounds in research, including a giant-pendulum-crash-simulator, the duo
designed the pads for Vancouver 2010 specifically for their respective arenas
and sports.
